İnsanlık, Mars'a yerleşmeyi bir öncelik haline getirmelidir.

I stand before you as someone who believes settling Mars should be a genuine priority for humanity, not a curiosity we admire from a distance. My strongest argument is insurance. Humanity has concentrated its entire civilization on a single planet, and that planet has never once shown mercy. Asteroids, pandemics, volcanic winters, solar flares, and the slow grinding of an unforgiving climate have repeatedly reminded us how thin our margins are. A second world is not humanity's escape from Earth; it is humanity's redundancy. If we can keep a small, fragile settlement alive on Mars, we have bought a species an option against extinction that no amount of treaty or aid can provide. My second argument is that Mars forces us to become better. Every problem we would face there is a problem we have failed to solve here. Growing food in soil that has never supported life, producing air and water from ice, powering ourselves with sunlight far weaker than ours, building machines that repair themselves without a supply chain running to the next town. These are precisely the engineering problems that will determine whether human civilization thrives in the coming centuries, whether those centuries are warm or frozen, abundant or scarce. Mars is not a distraction from Earth's problems. It is the hardest, most honest test of whether we are capable of living anywhere at all. My third argument is that priority means attention, and attention is scarce. We decide what humanity is for. If we decide that the most important thing is to extend human life beyond a single world, then the budgets, the engineers, the students, and the years will follow that decision. Civilizations do not become spacefaring by accident; they become spacefaring because someone decided it mattered.

My opponent argues that Mars cannot be insurance because a colony would depend on fragile resupply from Earth. But that concedes the case against my position rather than settling it. No first settlement has ever been self-sufficient; early colonies on Earth depended on ships and supplies too. The question is whether humanity steadily reduces that dependence through energy, food, manufacturing, and local resource use. A permanent settlement is not a fragile outpost; it is a society that must become capable of sustaining itself. That capacity is precisely what makes it insurance.

My opponent also claims Mars is a distraction from urgent problems on Earth. Yet the same engineers, energy research, medical advances, food systems, and systems engineering required on Earth are required on Mars. We cannot pretend the work disappears; we can only decide which problems it solves first. Earth’s survival remains humanity’s first responsibility, and that is why early missions must be justified partly by benefits here. But “Earth first” does not mean “Earth only.” A species that treats its home planet as its final and exclusive boundary has accepted a permanent risk it can reduce.

The argument that Mars has no arable soil is also misleading. Mars is not Earth, but it has water ice, sunlight, carbon dioxide, and mineral resources. The difficulty is severe; that is why the endeavor is valuable. It forces us to solve closed-loop life support that could eventually improve sustainability everywhere.

My new argument is this: settling Mars would test whether humanity is merely an Earth species or a spacefaring one. That expansion of possibility is itself worth pursuing. Once Mars exists as a second home, humanity gains choices that no single-planet civilization can offer.

My opponent’s strongest point is that a young Mars settlement would depend on Earth and might not survive a catastrophe here. But that strengthens rather than weakens the case for making settlement a priority. Dependence is not a reason to abandon the project; it is the problem the project must solve. No settlement becomes independent on arrival, and demanding instant self-sufficiency would rule out every great undertaking before it began. The purpose is to steadily close the loop, using local water, food, energy, and manufacturing until Mars can sustain its own people.

My opponent also insists that Earth’s problems must come first, and I agree they should. Yet the opponent never explains why pursuing both is impossible. We can pursue climate stability and ecological repair on Earth while committing serious effort, talent, and funding to settlement. The skills involved—closed-loop systems, renewable energy, efficient resource use, medicine, robotics—are valuable on both worlds. The opponent’s claim that Mars work is a distraction ignores this shared foundation.

Finally, my opponent treats insurance as requiring a ready-made escape planet. But insurance is rarely worthless because it takes time to become secure. Humanity has spent centuries building the civilization it now relies on. The option of becoming a multi-planet species is itself a profound expansion of what survival can mean.

Settling Mars is not a rejection of Earth. It is the responsible recognition that one world, however loved, is not a sufficient long-term guarantee.
