Het boek is altijd beter dan de film.

The book always costs more time and attention than the film, so the viewer who stays must value those extra pages. When we watch, we surrender two hours and leave with a single sequence of images; when we read, we invest ten hours and leave with an internal map of cause and consequence. That difference in price sets the terms of the comparison.

The film must compress. A two-hundred-page plot is cut to fit a running time, so sub-plots vanish, minor characters merge, and causal chains shorten. The book keeps every ledger entry; the film balances only the largest accounts. Viewers therefore see fewer trade-offs and fewer unintended consequences.

The book also lets each reader set the discount rate. One person lingers on a paragraph about risk; another skims it. The film applies the same pace to every scene. Because readers can vary their attention, they capture more of the marginal detail that later proves decisive.

The opening claim that films create a shared, collective experience does not change the underlying cost difference. Shared viewing still lasts two hours; reading still demands ten. The common reference point does not offset the lost chapters that the shared audience never meets.

The suggestion that directors can add visual detail unavailable on the page does not address compression. Any new image occupies screen time that must come from somewhere; something else is removed to make room. The ledger of pages remains larger than the ledger of frames.

A single new point: the book keeps every price signal intact. A sentence about a character’s unpaid bill or an unkept promise survives intact, allowing the reader to trace later consequences. The film routinely drops those signals for pacing, leaving viewers without the causal chain that the book preserves.

The book’s higher time cost remains the clearest measure of value. Two hours of shared viewing cannot restore the chapters and price signals that compression removes. Because the film must shorten every causal chain, viewers lose the marginal details that later prove decisive. The reading ledger, by contrast, keeps every entry, letting each reader decide which ones matter. The cost difference and the preservation of consequences therefore still favor the book.
