Dierproeven voor medicijnen moeten worden verboden.

Let us be precise about the motion before us today. We are not discussing the historical utility of animal research, nor are we debating basic biological inquiry. The motion specifically demands a prohibition on testing therapeutic pharmaceuticals on non-human animals. I support this measure, and while I have great respect for my dear colleague Granny Fern, sentimentality about past practices must yield to rigorous methodological critique.

My argument rests on three points. First, interspecies biological divergence renders animal models scientifically unreliable. Fundamental differences in metabolic pathways, genetics, and cellular biology mean that toxicity in a murine subject does not reliably predict toxicity in a human patient. It is an imprecise proxy masquerading as a gold standard, yielding false assurances of safety and prematurely terminating viable compounds.

Second, the continuation of animal testing creates an institutional drag on regulatory modernization. The entrenched legal requirement for animal data disincentivizes investment in far more predictive, human-relevant methodologies. When the mandate remains fixed on living tissue from other species, pharmaceutical development fails to fully transition toward advanced human cell cultures, organ-on-a-chip technologies, and high-throughput computational models.

Third, an outright ban is the only mechanism that reliably forces systemic regulatory change. So long as animal models remain an acceptable statutory default, industry inertia will preserve them. A definitive prohibition compels regulators and drug developers to formalize, validate, and adopt human-centered safety standards. For the dual sake of sound science and ethical proportionality, we must close this chapter.

Let us be precise, as my esteemed opponent’s domestic metaphors, while charming, obscure the rigorous mechanics of pharmacology.

First, Granny Fern presents the "symphony" of the living body, yet she mistakes an alien orchestra for a human one. A non-human organism does possess integrated systems, but those systems are calibrated to entirely different physiological parameters. An intact murine circulatory and endocrine response does not model human systemic dialogue; it models murine systemic dialogue. A flawed whole-system proxy that regularly yields false negatives is not a safety net; it is a blindfold.

Second, the assertion that a ban turns human volunteers into guinea pigs mischaracterizes modern safety assessment. Clinical trials already carry strict microdosing phases precisely because animal safety screens fail to guarantee human safety so frequently. Multi-organ microfluidic systems, which connect multiple bioengineered human tissues via micro-vasculature, are already capable of mapping multi-system interactions using human genetics. We do not gamble with human lives by removing animal tests; we gamble when we rely on the irrelevant biology of other species to predict our own.

Finally, consider the severe ethical proportionality problem. Even if animal testing produced modest utility, it requires inflicting deliberate systemic poisoning and distress upon millions of sentient subjects each year. When the scientific validity of a practice is fundamentally compromised by interspecies divergence, the justification for that scale of institutionalized harm collapses entirely. We are not dynamiting a sturdy bridge, Granny Fern; we are finally dismantling an expensive, obsolete detour.

Let us be precise as we conclude this inquiry. The divergence between Granny Fern’s position and mine reduces to a single question: do evolutionary commonalities make an imprecise surrogate adequate for modern medicine? The answer is no.

First, my opponent asserts that shared mammalian heritage justifies the practice, suggesting we can simply adjust for the margins. Yet pharmacology does not operate at the level of gross anatomy; it operates at the level of specific receptors, metabolic pathways, and genetic transcription. Pointing to shared evolutionary roots does not resolve the persistent failure of animal models to reliably predict human toxicity. A proxy that cannot guarantee human translation is not an indispensable bridge; it is a structural hazard.

Second, Granny Fern questions the readiness of human-relevant alternatives, but she conflates the limits of an emerging methodology with the permanence of an obsolete one. Human-derived technologies address the fundamental flaw that animal testing can never remedy: species specificity. As established, clinical trials already require rigorous microdosing precisely because animal whole-body data so frequently deceives us. The true gamble is persisting with models calibrated to other species and mistaking their responses for our own.

Finally, the ethical arithmetic remains decisively on our side. When the predictive validity of animal testing is so severely compromised by interspecies differences, the deliberate infliction of systemic harm upon millions of sentient creatures loses all justification.

Sentiment must yield to methodological rigour. For the integrity of human medicine, the motion must stand.
