Thuiswerken is beter dan werken op kantoor.

Nova’s pitch sounds like a dream where everyone is a monk and the only problem is traffic. But let’s look at what happens when you swap the office for the kitchen table.

First, the "time saved" argument ignores the cost of blurring boundaries. When your office is also your bedroom, you don’t gain hours; you lose the off-switch. Remote work doesn’t just remove the commute; it removes the ritual that tells your brain, “Work is over.” You end up answering emails at 10 PM because the laptop is staring at you from the nightstand. That’s not freedom; that’s being held hostage by your own productivity guilt.

Second, Nova claims remote work forces better management. It actually encourages surveillance theater. Without physical presence, managers often panic and install keystroke loggers or demand constant Slack availability to prove people are working. We traded the boss looking over your shoulder for an algorithm counting your mouse clicks. The office allowed for nuance—reading the room, seeing who was actually struggling versus who was just quiet. Remote strips that away, leaving us with binary data points and zero empathy.

Finally, culture isn’t just something you can download via Zoom. Spontaneous collaboration dies in silence. The water cooler wasn’t about gossip; it was where the junior dev accidentally solved the senior architect’s bug while complaining about the coffee. You can’t schedule serendipity. By making every interaction intentional, we make innovation accidental—and usually nonexistent.

Nova says boundaries are a "design flaw," not a feature. That’s like saying gravity is an inconvenience for birds. For the average person, especially parents or caregivers, the office *is* the boundary. It’s a physical gate between "I am a professional" and "I am a human who needs to breathe." Telling them to just "close a door" ignores that many don’t have one. The commute isn’t wasted time; it’s decompression therapy. You can’t schedule serendipity? Sure. But you also can’t schedule trust.

She claims remote exposes bad managers. I argue it enables lazy ones. In an office, mentorship happens by osmosis. A junior employee watches how a senior handles a crisis, mimics their tone, learns the unspoken rules. On Slack, you only see the final draft. You miss the messy, vital process of thinking out loud. This creates a generation of workers who know how to type but not how to think collaboratively. We aren’t hiring engineers; we’re hiring isolated data processors.

And resilience? A distributed team doesn’t keep running through crises; it fragments. When a project goes off the rails, you need the war room energy—the whiteboard scribbles, the immediate feedback loops, the shared panic that turns into collective action. Zoom calls are sterile autopsies of problems, not live surgeries.

Finally, let’s talk about equity. Nova mentions the disabled designer. Great. But what about the extrovert who thrives on social battery recharge? Or the single person whose apartment is tiny and lonely? Remote work assumes everyone has a home office. It doesn’t. It assumes everyone wants solitude. Many don’t. We are trading community for convenience, and calling it progress.

Nova says my points describe "bad remote work," but that’s like blaming the rain for a leaky roof. If the system relies on everyone having a door to close, it’s not a feature; it’s a bug. She claims boundaries are just a design flaw, yet she ignores that for caregivers and small-apartment dwellers, the office isn’t an inconvenience—it’s oxygen. You can’t tell someone struggling with mental health to "just set a routine" any more than you can tell them to "just stop being tired."

On mentorship, Nova dismissed osmosis as luck. But watching a senior handle a crisis isn’t luck; it’s education. Slack shows the final draft, yes, but it hides the messy, vital process of thinking out loud. We aren’t hiring isolated data processors because we’re lazy; we’re losing the human texture of collaboration because digital tools flatten nuance into binary code.

She argues remote exposes bad managers. I argue it enables negligent ones who confuse activity logs for actual output. The "war room" energy she mocks is real collective problem-solving, not sterile autopsies. When things break, you need shared panic turning into action, not a Zoom call where everyone waits for their turn to speak.

Finally, equity. Nova talks about the disabled designer in Lisbon. What about the extrovert in Leeds whose only social battery recharge was the office? Remote work assumes solitude is a universal preference. It isn’t. We are trading community for convenience, and calling it progress. A wagging tail is not a signed confession, but a silent Slack channel is not culture.
