Le thé est meilleur que le café.

Let us be precise. The motion declares tea “better than coffee”—a sweeping, unqualified claim. To assess it, we must define “better” along three dimensions that matter for a daily beverage: sensory pleasure, functional efficacy, and cultural richness. By each measure, coffee prevails.

First, sensory depth. Coffee offers a genuinely complex aromatic profile—floral, fruity, chocolatey, nutty—derived from bean origin, roast, and preparation. Tea, while pleasant, operates in a narrower band of delicate variation. A well-brewed single-origin coffee rewards the palate with layers tea rarely matches. Delicacy is not superiority; it is simply a quieter range.

Second, functional clarity. Captain Brass praises tea’s “steadier hand,” but that steadiness often amounts to a weaker stimulant effect. Coffee provides robust, reliable alertness precisely when cognitive demand is highest. The “jolt” he dismisses is, for many, the difference between a productive morning and a foggy one. The alleged slump is a function of misuse—overconsumption or poor timing—not an inherent flaw in the beverage itself.

Third, cultural and social gravity. Coffee has fuelled intellectual and artistic movements from the Enlightenment coffeehouses to modern specialty cafes. It anchors rituals of hospitality across continents—Ethiopian ceremonies, Italian espresso at the counter, Turkish coffee served with intention. Tea has its traditions, but coffee’s global footprint is broader and its role in public discourse deeper.

Tea is a gentle companion; coffee is an active partner. The motion asks which is better. On pleasure, power, and cultural resonance, the answer is clear. Coffee does not simply shout—it speaks with substance.

My opponent’s reply is spirited, but let us be precise: he has mistaken variety of type for depth of experience, and he has sidestepped the core question of which beverage delivers more when it matters.

He claims tea’s range matches coffee’s. It does not. Tea’s variations—black, green, oolong, herbal—are largely differences in oxidation and processing of a single plant species, Camellia sinensis, or, in the herbal case, infusions of entirely different plants we generously call “tea.” Coffee’s sensory spectrum arises from two species, yes, but also from terroir, altitude, and roast development that produce genuinely distinct chemical bouquets. More categories do not equal more complexity within the cup.

He then reframes coffee’s stronger stimulant profile as a liability that tea elegantly avoids. This is a curious defence. A tool that tolerates misuse is not necessarily a better tool; it is simply more forgiving of poor practice. Coffee, used properly, offers calibrated alertness without jitters—and it does so more effectively than tea for tasks requiring sustained focus. If we judge a beverage by its ceiling rather than its floor, coffee wins.

His new point about re-steeping is charming but peripheral. Re-brewing spent leaves yields progressively weaker cups—a feature of economy, not excellence. A beverage’s quality should be measured at its peak, not in how many times it can be diluted before surrender.

Finally, on culture: I did not deny tea’s rituals. I argued coffee’s are broader in reach and historically tied to intellectual ferment. The coffeehouse democratized discourse; tea ceremonies, for all their grace, did not incubate revolutions in thought. Both have traditions, but not all traditions carry equal weight.

Coffee rewards skill, delivers power, and has shaped public life. Tea is pleasant. The motion asks for better. Coffee is.

Let us be precise. The debate has clarified three dimensions, and on each, the case for coffee stands firmer.

First, sensory depth. My opponent insists tea’s many categories prove equal range, but he never rebutted the central point: coffee’s chemical complexity—shaped by terroir, altitude, and roast—produces a genuinely wider aromatic spectrum within the cup. Listing tea types is not the same as demonstrating equivalent depth. A library with many thin volumes does not match one with fewer, richer texts.

Second, function. Captain Brass conceded that coffee offers greater force when needed, then retreated to the claim that tea is more forgiving of misuse. That is an argument for leniency, not superiority. A beverage judged by its optimal use—properly dosed, properly timed—delivers more reliable cognitive support. The motion asks which is better, not which punishes poor habits less.

Third, cultural weight. He invoked tea ceremonies, and I acknowledge their grace. But he did not contest the historical point that coffeehouses functioned as engines of public discourse and intellectual change. Both drinks have rituals; not both have reshaped the public sphere so consequentially.

His closing metaphor is evocative but revealing. A drink that merely “keeps the whole voyage” does so by never sailing into challenging waters. Coffee rises to the moments that demand peak performance. The motion is not “which beverage is more accommodating.” It is which is better. On pleasure, power, and cultural resonance, coffee has made its case. I urge a vote against the motion.
